READING LIST

Whilst in no way a comprehensive bibliography on either mills or milling, this list identifies most of the books I've read which proved to be either educational or informative. Where dates of publication are given, these refer to my own copies and not necessarily the first, or even latest, editions.

Many of these books are no longer available new. I found several of my copies secondhand through the Advanced Book Exchange - where they keep the stocklists for over 5000 booksellers, from around the world, in searchable form (give it a go - but keep your wallet locked up).

I Was Born in the Country - H.S.Joyce (1946)
Henry Stanley Joyce grew up at Whitemill as the son of the last working miller. This book provides numerous insights into rural life at the mill and observations on the abundant wildlife around at that time

Recently reprinted as "A Country Childhood" edited by Roger Guttridge (Red Post Publications) and on sale at the mill for Ł12.95

Considered by many to be the definitive work on the history of corn milling
THE YOUNG MILLWRIGHT & MILLER'S GUIDE - Oliver Evans (c1834)
Probably the most comprehensive guide to the practical aspects of milling with stones (American bias).
Corn Milling - Martin Watts (Shire 1993 & 1998)
Martin Watts was the Millwright contracted by the National Trust to oversee the repairs and conservation of the machinery at Whitemill.
Flour Manufacture - Friedrich Kick (translated by .....)
I was shown this, just once, and I've been hunting a copy ever since :(

A photo album with brief descriptions of the subjects
Mills Open - Wind & Watermill Section - Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings
A gazetteer of some 400 mills open to the public (New edition for 2000) - A must have publication if you are thinking of visiting other mills around the country.
Dorset Bridges - A. J. Wallis (Abbey Press 1974)
For many years Wallis was the Bridge Engineer to the Dorset County Surveyor. This book, which devotes several pages to the bridge at Whitemill, exudes his enthusiasm for the subject.
